if you haven’t noticed, this new district 9 trailer is buzzing all around.
it’s quite different, and looks to be very promising. but the thing that caught my attention was the music choice. upon viewing the trailer, i immediately recognized the track, and i had to think back to where i had heard it. after digging through my inspiration folder, i remembered that the music was from “solaris”, and it had also been used in one of my all-time favorite television spots.
the spot was produced for volkswagen, and in my opinion, it is incredibly powerful. the voiceover is done by richard burton, and it might be one of the best i have ever heard. combine that voice with the music of cliff martinez, and you have perfection. this ad is so well executed that it will literally haunt you. when the bass kicks in around the 0:58 mark, it gets me every time. i love seeing a piece of music span across several different platforms, and be equally effective in each of them.
two brand new albums. two completely different genres.
the first one is the latest album from the dangerous summer, which is overall pretty aggressive. i can definitely see myself using this in a graduation project. so far, my favorite track is “where i want to be”.
the second one is the latest album from jon hopkins, which will move you in a completely different direction. you will probably recognize “light through the veins”, as it was integrated into coldplay’s recent album. there are some fantastic tracks here, but i have to say, “small memory” absolutely gives me chills. truly gorgeous.
i received a link to a new video via twitter yesterday, and i immediately fell in love with it. not only for the production value, but for the amount of insight (no pun intended) that honda is showing. here is a company that “gets it”, and it makes me so excited to see marketing at this level.
to begin with, the video is incredible. from the song choice to the animation, it is captivating. but then they take it a step further by offering a behind the scenes look at how it was produced. now for a video geek like myself, this is the best part. but aside from the production, they are giving you a behind the scenes look at the thought process of honda. this makes it so much more personal. because now, you are not just watching an advertisement, you are engaging with the company. in modern marketing, this is key. this is how you connect with the customer.
but no doubt, the best part about the whole thing is the user experience. honda understands the power of online advertising, particularly through video. sure, this spot will air on television several times, but the audience is not engaged through television. they see the commercial, and thirty seconds later, they forget about it. however, by using a site like vimeo for their advertisement, they are once again engaging the audience. in fact, they have taken it a step further by incorporating the entire vimeo website, which is something i have never seen before. they are fully using the power of the web to take the audience on a one-of-a-kind adventure.
so obviously, as a viewer, it makes me want to talk about it. it makes me want to watch it over and over again. it makes me want to share the link with others. in sum, it works. and all that’s left to say is well done honda, well done.
landmark aviation is one of the nation’s largest networks that offers business aviation services. they have over 40 locations in the united states, canada, and western europe. their newest location is in asheville, near the asheville regional airport. i was contacted by landmark aviation to shoot the grand opening event at their new location.
